ROBISON, Frederick Mull b. 2 May 1925 d. 7 Mar 2000
3rd great-grandson of James Gardner and James Weir.
Husband of Loretta Jean (Williams). Son of Jesse A. & Lula Ellen (Mull) Robison.

Among the materials sent by -Frederick M. Robison of Salem Indiana who was a Weir descendant through Nancy Elizabeth (Weir) Robison Wife of John H. Robison Daughter of George Weir Sr. and Margaret (Gardner Weir. Frederick sent scans of photograph taken of the Beech Grove Presbyterian church being built. The photograph had been mounted on black cardboard . A date of 1913 had been written in ink on the dark mount. Showing workmen on the framework of the building The bell tower and the roof were not yet near completion. So this building could not have been used as a place of worship before 1913. With this photograph came a scan of a photograph taken in 1931 of the congregation consisting of 40 persons Each person had a number printed on his or her chest and a list of names appeared below the photograph designating the person with a corresponding number.
To my amazement there was only one Weir name in that list - Then I remembered that my Great Grandfather and Grandmother were married in a Methodist church near Beech Grove. That as a child in the Gardner family in Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas I celebrated “Founders day” of Hadley Methodist Church on the anniversary date of the formation of that church group. Great-Grandfather Samuel Gardner and his wife Margaret Rachel (Weir) Gardner were in that founding group.
As I remember the celebration - Some of the Gardner boys had married Schultz girls, and their father one Bailey Schultz had been an early Methodist preacher who had the reputation of being a pistol packing circuit rider whose sermons were of hell fire and damnation - He rode horseback from settlement to settlement in early Kansas, at a time of danger from indians, wild animals and hijacking. Later, On Founders day he took the pulpit once more and since Bailey was seldom without chewing tobacco in his mouth his sermons were punctuated by the ring of well aimed tobacco juice on the brass spitoon provided him. Of course, this delighted the children. On founders day we attended church and listened to Bailey Schultz deliver a sermon.
When we received the Obituary of Great Grandmothers uncle- David Francis Weir it was not much of a surprise that he had associated himself with a Methodist group in Kansas. It was well known in Washington Co., that the Presbyterian group was quite strict about keeping the Sabbath Holy - that no work be done, even to the extent that a boy who cracked a nut on the Sabbath was not abiding by the rules.

Source This letter as you will see was written to Robison, Weir and Gardner descendants who had been in contact with Frederick regarding their genealogy. - pretty much self explanatory.

Dear Robinson, Weirs and Gardners;
The more we search for our ancestors the more complicated it gets. I tend to believe everything that is written while some of you require more proof. An example is Ann Ramsey Weir which is probably wrong. ( I haven't had time to check this.)
ROBBISSONS, Robison, Robinson, Robertson -- so many people misspell our name that it makes it more difficult to trace. Still today 50% of the people that see our name misspell it and 75% if they hear it. My Father's and my opinion is that William Robison (1800 - 1886 _ and his family used the double letters to diferentiate. On his wife's and small children's stones it is double letters but by the time he died his stone is Robison. When my great uncle Crawford moved to New Albany, IN he used Robinson but his stone says Robison. Most stones in the New Philadelphia Cemetery records say Robinson but I think they are my line.
I cannot prove this but this is my theory. I think at least three Robison brothers came to Clark County, In via Rockbridge Co. VA by 1817. James Lived and died there. There are many Robisons buried in Clark Co., near New Washington, which is only a few miles North of the Ohio River at Utica where many settlers crossed. Henry and Joseph (brothers or cousins ) lived in Clark County about 1817 also. John and Robert moved to Washington Co. by 1820. a 1897 census in Virginia shows a Peter Robison with a son named John????.
Mary (Polly, was the wife of WM. Robison. -- I've heard through my father that Polly was a nickname for Mary at that time. Every family has a John, Robert, James, William, Mary, etc. so there were a lot of cousins with the same names. This also makes it difficult.
Most of My records are from Beech Grove, Franklin and New Philadelphia cemeteries. Beech Grove was rewritten in the 1970's and printing from stones was used. This is included in 1987 Franklin Township cemeteries, I also used some deeds and census records of Washington Co., of 1820, 1830, 1840, 1950 and 1880. I also used materials from Clark co., Library. We made a trip to Rockridge Co.., VA but did not learn as much there as I expected.
Julie Robison ( 1816 - 1857 ) North end of row 13-- Her name is all that is on the stone. it is next to Andrew DeWitt. I'm sure William Robison is not buried there. She could have been his second wife after Mary Thompson died in 1839 but I have no proof. However, she was in the William Robison Household in the 1850 census. Cassandra Weir & 7 months) is buried family of John J. St., and Mary J. - also Clement.
I've almost forgotten what I have already mailed, of course Huston's and Miller's, are in the families. I have 1uite a lot on the Hustons. Do you have anything on Edward, Erastus, Dennis or Spencer Weir?
Yesterday I went back to the Salem Historical Museum. They have a lot on the Weirs. I'm sure you have some of it. The trouble is it does not all agree.
I did find that Ann Ramsey is the wife of another James that went to Kentucky. Some think that William was the father of the three brothers that married the Gardner sisters. More think it was James. i think they were brothers as the DAR chart shows. Also I knew Erastus Weir and believe he is right about it being James.

Sincerely,

Frederick M. Robison

Frederick Married his high school sweetheart, Loretta Williams on Dec 18 1944. They had one daughter Kay Yvonne, born on Christmas day 1948. She is married to John P. Begley. After serving over 2 years in the army in the Phillipine Islands Frederick worked over 33 years as farm manager on Dr. Jame CcCullough's 920 acre Livestock Farm near Hardinsburg. At one time while our father was visiting, Frederick was washing and fitting cattle for a show or sale. When he asked if he wanted to help daddy's reply was "I'm over 70 years old and never washed a cow. I don't think I'll start now/"
Frederick and Loretta now live in Salem, IN. where he still works part time as an agricultural Crop Insurance adjuster. He has been active in civic activities being president of the Washington Co., Fair Board and member of the Washington Co., Park Board for 25 years (President for the last 15 years) He was also moderaror on the New Albany Presbytory. He has been Sec. Treas. of the Beech Grove Cemetery Association ever since his father died in 1971. Six generations of Robisons and Weirs will be be found buried their. Our Great-Grandfather, John H. Robison, was a presbyterian church member for 73 years and an elder for 43 years. It seems Frederick is trying to keep up - Presbyterian member for 60 years and elder for 45 years. I think our father Jesse had that kind of record also.
Loretta worked over 25 years as a Bookkeeper at the Leader Publishing Co., and Farm Bureay Corp. She has also been chairman or our County DAR and Phi Beta Psi. Kay has been a bookkeeper in banks for thirty years, John is now director of Louisville's Visual Arts Association.
