Benjamin Boomer as having married Sarah Johnson in Scott county, Indiana. 3-6-1843

At the time of the divorce two children are listed, as George B. Boomer, and Benjamin T. Boomer. At the time of the 1850 census George B. was living with the family of James William Weir, in Washington county. Much later I found him as a School teacher in sott County. unfortunatly I have lost the location of that source of information. In the 1850 Scott County census shown below - Jane Ann Boomer age 11 is listed. 1850 - 11 = 1839 No other record of this child has been found (Oct 2000) .

The land that the Boomers lived on was divided and sold. - a portion of which the house was located was deeded to Margaret Jane, part was sold to James Gardner weir, - Margarets brother, from deed Book for 1842 p. 162 - 163

Located in Finley township, Scott county, Indiana, in the S. E. 1/4 of the N. E. Quarter Section 20, T2N, R. E., on land originally entered by Dr. John Richey on December 9 1836: It is on an abandoned road winding along a ridge top, which comes out on Taylor road .3 of a mile west of the Dr. John Richey Cemetery, which is on the north branch of Big Ox creek. It is on a high point surrounded by Virginia pines. Between the cemetery and the road can be seen all that remains of Cozad Stark's house - a large well filled with water. Old School # 7 once was located adjoining the cemetery. There is evidence of many unmarked graves, as well as graves marked only with rough stones. (Copied from the 1978 Scott County Cemetery book. This cemetery is maintained by the Scott County Cemetery Commission.)
This old cemetery is referred to as the Stark Dean cemetery by Jeff Harmon - a Hobbs- Weir descendant.

That John Harrison and James Sylvester Weir were born in Illinois. They are thought to have been in Clark Co., Illinois in 1859 and should appear in the 1860 census there. The last child of James Gardner Weir and Mary Ann Hougland was born in Missouri and did not live. George Gardner Weir had married Medora E. OBITUARY
George William Weir, Died, at his home in East Carthage, on Friday morning March 26th Inst., in the 68th year of his age.Mr. Weir was born March 12, 1819, in Washington County, Indiana, where he grew to manhood and the year 1839 he was married to Miss Jane McCullough with whom he happily lived until his death, and who, with seven children, survives to morn his loss. Of two other children given them, a daughter died in early life and a son died in the service of his country, as a soldier during the late war.
His early married life was spent in Washington and Scott Counties, Indiana. In 1857 he removed with his family to Carthage, (Hancock, County) Illinois, and after some changes of location purchased a farm and made a pleasant home two miles east of Carthage where the family now reside.
He was a thrifty and upright man in his business, prosecuting with energy and success; a kind and obliging neighbor, an intelligent and patriotic citizen, highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him.
He became a christian in his 16th year, uniting with Presbyterian Church in Indiana, and on his removal to this state transferring his connection to the Presbyterian church in Carthage. Of this church he was made a deacon in 1866. His christian character was marked by firm convicition and careful conscientiousness. Nor did he lack the courage of his convictions. This led him for a time to connect himself with the United Presbyterian church at Elvaston. But changes taking place there, other counsels prevailed and he returned to the Presbyterian church in Carthage, in whose fellowship he ever since continued a highly esteemed member. He was a devoted student of the Bible, delighting to meditate on its inspired and inspiring truths daily. No one could doubt the sincerity of his faith, And the strength of it appeared in his last sickness, imparting to him an unwontned cheerfulness and patience, enabling him constantly to rely with unshaken conficence on his Saviour, and when he knew his end was near to speak a parting word with each member of his family, all of whom, children and grand children, were present. He retained his consciousness to the last and passed quietly away in the enjoyment of a good home, through grace, of everlasting life.
His sons J. E. Weir and Dr. Wm A. Weir of Camp Point, Illinois, were with their father constantly during the last week of his sickness, aiding the brothers and sisters residing at and near the home in his care.
The funeral was attended at the family residence on Saturday March 27, by a large gathering of neighbors and firends, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. S. G. Hyde, who, after the singing, scripture reading, and prayer, preached from 1 John 3,2: "Beloved now are we the Sons of God. and it doth not yet appear what we shall be., but we know that when He shall appear we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is."
The burial rite was in the old cemetery.

This small cemetery, still used today and well-maintained, is variously called Old Hope or Hopewell. It is said there was once a church there possibly Presbyterian. Those who could have told us of its past history are all gone, and records in the Courthouse give us no clues. It is located on State Road 356 about a mile east of Vienna, in the east half of the Northeast Quarter of Section 4, T4N., R. 7E., in 1889, this land was owned by J. A. Mercer. There are 74 marked burials and evidence of other unmarked graves.

David F. Weir
One of the Earliest Settlers of this County, Died Friday Night
David Francis Weir, one of the oldest settlers of Clay county, died at his country home east of the city about 11 o'clock Friday night, of hemorrhage of the lungs. The funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church and were largely attended. Rev. J. D. Perring, Rev. J. M. Ryan and Rev. W. A. Crawford made appropriate remarks, touching upon the character and life history of the deceased, after which the remains were taken to Greenwood and laid to rest.
Mr. Weir was born October 9, 1823, in Washington County, Indiana.
He was married October 29 1846 to Sarah Gardner who died August 5, 1868. In March, 1869 he came to Kansas and in the following October was married to Mahala Marston, who survives him. By the first marriage there were nine children born to him, of whom three are living, and by the second marriage there are three living and one dead.
As to church relations, Mr. Weir was brought up a Presbyterian. In April, 1871, he took part in the organiization of the Presbyterian church in Clay Center. In 1872 he was elected a ruling elder in that church. in 1878 he became a member of the Methodist organization and continued to affiliate with that church for seventeen years.

Sarah GARDNER

I have not found any records that indicate middle name Jane - In fact it seems none of the daughters of James Gardner, or his son George were given a middle name. The only usage of middle names that I have found in this group is for the youngest child of George Gardner- Hannah Gardner (Herron)

Obituary:
Mrs. Mahala Weir
Ninety years of living, watching sunsets and dawnings through that long period, marked the span of life for Mrs. Mahala Weir. A book could be written on her early days and experiences in Clay Cenrer as it was in frontier days; the hardships, crop failures, blizzards, the visits of the Indians, and many other things which made up early Kansas history. In many ways Mrs. Weir was a remarkable woman and she never lost her courage or sane outlook on life.
In the year of 1867 as Mahala Marston, an orphan girl , she came from Illinois to Clay Center, Kansas to make her home with her sister, Mrs. George Burger. They were neices of the Dexter brothers. the founders of Clay Center, which was then a tiny prairie village, with streets reaching from hilltiiip to hilltop . Within her day, homes, stores, churches, schools and fraternal orders came into existance here and staunch friendships were established. Hard work and privations taught her the simple joys of life, and her journey through life was marked with kindness, meekness, forebearance and charity for all, and in her younger years she gave freely of her time to help others. Although she had grown frail with advancing years, Mrs. Weir was active to the last, and never lost interest in events of the day. She attended the First M. E. church regularly but was unable to go after the first Sunday in January. She was always busy doing little things about the home of her Son, Samuel Weir, east of Clay Center, which is the old Weir Homestead, where she came as a bride sixty-eight years ago, and has since lived there.
Old age is a part of the scheme of life, and Mrs. Weir had passed the stone that marked the highest point, and being weary she quietly went to sleep Sunday evening March 21, 1937, going on to the eternal rest at the age of 90 years, one month and two days.
The chronology of her long and useful life follows:
Mahala Marston Weir daughter of Eri and Esther Marston was born February 18, 1847 at Wenderson Co., Illinois. She received her education in Bloomington, Ill and after the death of her parents came to Clay Center in 1866. She was married to David Francis Weir October 17, 1869 at Clay Center Kansas and to this union four children were born, Esther, who died in childhood. The surviving children are Harvey of Coy, Oklahoma, Rose Weir Derbyshire, of Omaha, Nebraska, Sam Weir of Clay Center. Mr. Weir died in 1895.Besides the daughter and two sons she leaves to cherish her memory three grandchildren, Dexter Marston Weir of Clay Center, Russell Clay Derbyshire of Omaha, Nebraska, Ruth Derbyshire Bloomquist of Alta, Iowa. Also five great grandchildren, Donald, William, Rose Marie and James Weir of Clay Center and Robert John Bloomquist of Alta, Iowa. Mrs Weir taught two terms in the first log school house in Clay Center. She was a christian from childhood and one of the first members of the First M. E. Church also the Missionary societies and W. C. T. U. of Clay Center.
In keeping with Mrs. Weirs wishes the final rites were very simple. The funeral was held at the Peterson Chapel Tuesday afternoon with Rev. L. F. Arend officiating. He paid eloquent tribute to this pioneer mother, using as his text "She was a good woman" Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Humfeld with Miss Ailene Wilson as accompanist sang "Rock of Ages" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Body bearers were Charles Arnett, John Mugler, George Fritz, Sr. James Carnahan, Carl Plock and Walter Haws, all neighbors of the Weirs, Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetary.
The presence of relatives and friends and the beauriful flowers were silent expressions of regard.

The Bible of David and Jane (Gardner) Weir - inherited by James William and Sarah McKnight clearly shows Jennet Gardner Weir was born December the 30th 1833. She used name Jane G. in Census and marriage License.
Robert A. Weir is son of George and Margaret (Gardner) Weir. Robert A. bought the old George Weir farm from his brothers and sisters after the Father George Weir died, In 1856 Robert married Jennet G. Weir (the Irish equivalent of Jane) daughter of James William and Sarah (McKnight) Weir later Robert and Jane appear in the1870 Census that is shown belowthen at unknown date they moved to parts unknown. Some say they went to Texas. Other researchers, early in the 1940's, have listed Robert A. Weir as having married Zenna Jane Weir. The Bible of David and Jane had not been found yet, and the Book of Affidavits and Consents had not been written at that point in time. Another factor - the handwriting at that time was quite different from that of today. James William Weir - son of David and Jane (Gardner) Weir - In recording the death of David Weir Senior the Month of August is a a good example of how he made the letter A The two Vertical sides of the A did not converge at the top of the letter -it appears that the letter was made with three strokes The left side of the letter - an ascending curve with a tiny hook or flourish at the beginning of the stroke The second stroke similar to a tall seven that connected with the top of the first strke - Then the Third stoke connecting the two others similar to where we would put the crossbar on a printed Capital H. No wonder they read it as an H for for affidavits and Consents.
